We’ve all heard it: the phone case is just the thing you need to get you through a long day of work.
So it’s no surprise that many people still opt for the familiar plastic shell on the front and back of their phones, or to have a simple black and white backplate.
And although the majority of smartphone cases are made from either plastic or plastic-like material, the most common type is the “metal” case, which is actually a plastic shell covered in an opaque material that acts as a protective layer.
The problem with this approach is that it has a tendency to trap light inside, so if you have a lot of light shining on your phone, the shell will darken and look dull, rather than look like a beautiful display.
Thankfully, there are ways to make the case look nice and clear without resorting to a glossy black or white finish.
The solution is to apply a layer of a non-toxic coating to your device’s front and rear panels, which will create a thin layer of clear material on the outside of the case.
This allows light to pass through and creates a very clear screen.
While this method may seem like a simple one, it requires a bit more time to set up and use than other options, which can also delay the end result.
So, let’s take a look at how to get a case that will do just fine for your smartphone.
How to apply the coating The coating needs to be applied to the phone before you put it on.
If you’re already using a case like the one shown above, simply dab a small amount of the coating onto the back and sides of your device.
This will add a thin coating to the back of the device, making it easier to use.
Alternatively, you can apply the coatings to your phone with a soft sponge or a paintbrush, as shown in the image below.
If using a paint brush, apply the top coat first.
You want to be able to see the clear plastic on the back, as it’s usually much more transparent than the transparent plastic on a regular case.
You’ll want to do this first to make sure that you don’t leave too much residue on your device, which could damage your screen or cause the phone to crack.
Once the topcoat is applied, you’ll want a small layer of the clear material placed over your screen, as well as a layer or two of a light-reflecting material.
The paintbrush can be used to apply some of this material onto the front, while a soft plastic sponge is also a good option to add a touch of gloss to your design.
How you choose your screen protector After applying the topcoating to your screen and front, you should apply the back coat to the sides and bottom of the phone as well.
This can be done either with a paint sponge or with a sponge, or both.
If applying with a brush, make sure you apply a thin, light coating to all of your sides and back, and a layer on top of your display.
If not, use a paintbrushes paintbrush to apply one or both layers of the top coating on your front and sides, then cover the whole phone with the backcoat.
Apply the top and bottom coat to all sides and front of your phone and you’re done!
You can also use a soft material like plastic or clear to add some gloss to the design, but it won’t look as good as a glossy one.
If your device has a display protector, you may need to use it as well, to create a little more contrast and to help hide the black-and-white LCD screen.
The back coat is applied to your display protector.
If it’s clear, you’re good to go.
If the back is coated in a light material like clear, try adding a layer to the display protector to create contrast and gloss.
Once you’ve applied the top, bottom, and display coatings, you need a second layer of coating to protect your phone from dust and other dirt.
To do this, apply a light coating, like a sponge or paintbrush.
You can then wipe the screen with a dry cloth or a paper towel, and then apply a soft, white material, like plastic, to the edges of your screen.
Apply a second coat of clear coating on top.
Finally, apply another layer of white to the bottom and display protector for a final glossy finish.
This finish is applied with a small paintbrush or a soft fabric like cotton or wool, as pictured below.
The finished phone looks pretty stunning.
If everything looks good, you might want to try applying some light-reflection coating on the edges and back too, to make them even more reflective.
